Basic Glossary

This is intended to be a basic glossary of terms that are commonly encountered at the Sangamon Aikikai. It is not all-inclusive.

Strikes

  • shomen uchi - front or top of head
  • yokomen uchi - side of head
  • tsuki - thrust or punch

Grabs

  • katate tori - one hand grab
  • ryote tori - both hands grab both wrists
  • morote tori - two hands grab one arm (baseball bat style)
  • kata tori - shoulder grab

Movements

  • irimi - entering
  • tenkan - turning
  • tenshin - diagonal retreat

Stances

  • gyaku hanmi - opposite, or mirror, stance
  • ai hanmi - same foot forward

Front and Back

  • omote - front
  • ura - rear
  • ushiro - backwards or behind

Roles

  • uke - the attacker (the receiver)
  • nage - the defender (the thrower)

General

  • dojo - where we practice
  • kamiza - small shrine in the front of the dojo
